NEW PROGRAM: "I CAN READ"

This year we began the project we call "I CAN READ" with the kids of kinder. Until the school library existed, thanks to the kind donations we have received, this program would not be possible.

The main idea is for the children to discover the hidden treasures inside a book. For the moment these children cannot read, so the first step is to learn how to use a book.
I Can Read!
Before this program starts the children are brought to visit the lone Tuete tree near the front of the escuela. Their village of Tuetal is named after this tree and we explain how important plants are and that this plant is the most important as it gave it's name to the village. Some of these ideas get back to the parents.

To start they make their first visit to the school library and learn about all the materials that in the library. They learn about the maps, the globe, the computer, the TV, the displays of the human body, the earth etc.

In the second visit they can take a book and are given a homework assignment. Part of this process is to teach how to be carefull with the book and how to make sure it is returned to the library. This may seem obvious but neither the children nor the parents have ever been inside a library.
My Own Story

On their third visit to the library they see a movie, and discuss as a group what they saw and what it means. Examples of such movies include cone we have about a bug called Ernie who is put in situations that have moral implications.

The next visit is called the 4th visit for reasons that should be obvious . . .
